Top 5 Best Bittorrent Clients (2018)

uTorrent was my favorite bittorrent client for a long time. It has been one of the most popular clients for years. But now they’ve gone and ruined it. uTorrent has been including scammy advertisements and bundling junkware with the client. I have no problem with the occasional advertisements, but including junkware is my limit.

So it’s time to give the other alternatives out there a serious go. Here I’m going to review 5 of the best bittorrent clients as of 2015-2016.

# Name Ads? Platform Usability Features Rating
1 qBittorrent No Windows, Linux, Mac Excellent Very Good 9/10
2 Deluge No Windows, Linux, Mac Very Good Good 8/10
3 Transmission-Qt No Windows, Linux, Mac Very Good Good 8/10
4 Tribler No Windows, Linux, Mac Good Good 7/10
5a Vuze No Windows, Linux, Mac Good Average 6/10
5b Leap No Windows Good Average 6/10

#1 qBittorrent

qBittorrent Best Bittorrent Client

qBittorrent is a free open source alternative to uTorrent. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and OS/2. The qBittorrent user interface is intentionally designed to look similar to uTorrent. Which is one reason why I like it. uTorrent was great untill they decided to take a few steps too far in monetizing the program.

qBittorrent has many features including integrated torrent search, magnet and bitcomet link support, DHT, peerexchange and full encryption. You can also remote control the app via a web interface. Additionally it has advanced torrent management, UPnP and NAT-PMP support. qBittorrent supports multiple languages. It also has a torrent creation tool, bandwidth scheduler, supports sequential downloading, IPv6 compliance and more.

#2 Deluge

Deluge is a free open source full-featured bittorrent client. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and FreeBSD. Deluge has several interfaces, including a desktop interface as well as a web interface. It also has a console interface, so you can use it remotely via SSH on a Linux server for example. The only problem I had with Deluge was changing languages on Windows. There’s no option to change language in the settings and I had to do some searching on Google to find out how to do it.

Deluge has the following features. It can run as a daemon in the background and can be remotely managed via a web and/or console interface. Deluge supports encryption, magnet link support, DHT, peer exchange and local peer discovery. It also has support for UPnP and NAT-PMP, proxies, advanced torrent management, webseed and much more.

#3 Transmission-Qt

Transmission QT

Transmission was originally only available for Mac and Linux. But there’s an unofficial version called Transmission-Qt for Windows. Transmission has a very clean interface that is easy and simple to use, but it also has a powerful set of features.

These features include encryption, remote access via web interface, peer exchange, magnet link support, DHT, UPnP and NAT-PMP support. Additionally it has webseed support, watch directories, tracker editing, advanced torrent management and more.

#4 Tribler

Tribler is a peer-to-peer filesharing program, developed by computer scientists at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. It has expanded on the aging bittorrent protocol by adding new features such as streaming via magnet links, keyword search for content, channels and reputation management. But Tribler still remains backwards compatible with the original bittorrent protocol.

Tribler has also attempted to address bittorrents lack of security when it comes to privacy by developing a Tor-like onion routing network for torrent downloads. This technology is still experimental and not fully developed. So it may not be absolutely secure, but it is an interesting development regardless.

Tribler has most of the features you’d expect from a bittorrent client, and it is also completely free and open source. Tribler has no advertisements or bundled software.

#5 Vuze & Leap

Vuze Leap

Vuze and Leap are bittorrent clients developed by Azureus Software. Vuze is available Windows, Mac and Linux. But Leap is only available for Windows.

Leap is a really simple bittorrent client with limited features but no advertisements. Vuze is slightly more rich in terms of features but it is ad supported with optional adware pushed in the installation. Vuze also has a commercial alternative Vuze+ with more features and no advertisments.

Leap features include access to Vuze torrent bundles, magnet link support, media playback and torrent search. Vuze has the same features as Leap. Additionally it has access to a plug-in library for additional customization, advanced torrent management, remote control via web or mobile, and DHT support.
