#1 Bitdefender Antivirus Free
Bitdefender Antivirus Free is a lightweight free antivirus developed by Bitdefender, a internet security company from Romania. Bitdefender is suitable for both high-end computers as well as older and slower computers. The interface is very simple, perhaps a bit too simple as it does not have many settings or indicators.
Features include real-time antivirus and antirootkit protection, full system scanning, active virus control, cloud-based machine learning, b-have, intrusion detection and automatic updates.
Bitdefender is available for Windows, Mac and Android devices.
Bitdefender has no pop-up or other advertisements, but it does require you to sign-up at the Bitdefender website to use the software.
#2 Panda Free Antivirus
Panda Free Antivirus 2016 is a free antivirus program developed by the Spanish company Panda Security SL.
Panda isn’t exactly lightweight but it does perform fairly good on slower computers due to it’s cloud-based real-time virus scanning, which does a lot of the hard work in the cloud. Other free features include antivirus, antimalware and antispyware protection, automatic URL and web filtering and automatic updates.
Panda Free Antivirus is only available for Windows.
Panda does have almost daily pop-up advertisements, but they only advertise Panda software and are non-invasive.
#3 Avira Free Antivirus
Avira Free Antivirus is developed by Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG, a German family-owned multinational corporation.
Free features for Avira include antivirus, antimalware and antispyware protection, real-time cloud scanning, the Avira browser safety extension and remote management of multiple devices via the Avira website.
The Avira interface has a more classic look, but it is very functional and the software should work on older computers without hogging too many system resources.
Avira is available for Windows, Mac and Android devices.
Avira has frequent pop-up advertisements, which are fairly non-invasive.
#4 AVG Free Antivirus
AVG Free Antivirus is made by AVG Technologies, a company from the Czech Republic.
AVG Free Antivirus has plenty of free features such as antivirus, antimalware and antispyware protection, link and email protection, WiFi guard which protects against fake WiFi hotspots, identity protection, free phone support and automatic updates.
The AVG interface is modern and easy to navigate.
AVG is available for Windows, Mac and Android devices.
AVG has very infrequent pop-up advertisements, I could go months without a single one. But AVG has revealed that they make money by selling non-personal browsing history and other meta data to advertising companies.
#5 avast! Free Antivirus
Avast Free AntiVirus 2015 is developed by AVAST Software, a internet security company based in the Czech Republic.
Features for Avast Free Antivirus include antivirus and antimalware protection, home network security, browser cleanup and automatic updates.
The Avast interface is modern and easy to use. You can also find some interesting facts and figures in the statistics tab.
Avast is available for Windows, Mac and Android devices.
Avast does have almost daily pop-up advertisements for it’s own products, they are fairly non-invasive though.
I had my share of problems with Avast. First of all, the Home Network Security feature caused my computer to crash when I used Bittorrent. When I tried to uninstall Avast, the uninstaller crashed and I had to reboot into safe mode to get rid of it. But it could just have been a compatibility issue with my network adapter or outdated drivers, so this might not happen to you.
