Best Laptops for Gaming 2016-2017

This time we’re going to look at the best laptops for gaming, although these computers also have the components to do other high performance things like video editing, 3d modeling, 3d animations and so on.

I’m not going to have a standard top 5 or top 10 list, instead there’s going to be a few different categories where I briefly review my top choice and also list a runner up for second place.

I have not personally had the opportunity to test all of these laptops, so my reviews will be based on the laptop specs, the quality of previous laptops of the same brand, customer reviews and ratings as well as my own experiences with similar laptops.

# 2nd Place: Acer Predator 17 X

The Asus ROG, or Republic of Gamers, G752 VY DH78K is the overall best and also one of the more expensive 17 inch gaming laptops I found on Amazon.

The laptop itself looks pretty cool, it has a grey metallic look with some red orange exhaust grills at the back and also similar LED backlighting for the keyboard.

Performance wise this ROG is very good, it has a Quad Core Intel i7 processor, 64GB of DDR4 memory and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics card along with a full HD display. These components will allow you to play pretty much any game out there with ultra high graphics settings and high definition video editing and rendering should not be a problem either. For file storage it has a 1TB SATA harddrive and Windows 10 is installed on a 512GB SSD drive, which will help it boot up really fast and run very smooth.

As for connectivity and other features, it has all the basics, including Wifi, Bluetooth, a Gigabit ethernet port and 4 USB ports. It even has a Blue-Ray DVD player, which is not often found in laptops anymore. You can also plug-in a second display into a HDMI port and it also has a fairly decent 8-cell lithium ion battery.

The laptop costs $3027.14 on Amazon where customer ratings rate it at 3.9 out of 5 stars. It has received mostly good reviews, although there have been some complaints regarding the amount of bloatware Asus has preinstalled on the laptop, some start-up issues which were resolved after NVIDIA driver updates and the fact that the keyboard backlighting is only activated after you log in to Windows, which seems to be a problem on most new Asus ROG laptops.

# 2nd Place: Lenovo Z70

If you’re looking for a somewhat cheaper 17 inch gaming laptop, Asus has another Republic of Gamers laptop which is the best one I could find for just under $1000.

It’s the Asus ROG GL752 VW DH71 which has a similar grey metallic look as the previous ROG, although without the red orange grills, but it does still have a red backlit keyboard.

As for the specifications, it comes with a slightly weaker Intel i7 processor compared to the previous ROG, 16GB of DDR4 memory, 2 gig NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics card and a full HD display. For file storage it has a 1TB SATA harddrive and the OS is Windows 10. You’ll be able to play most games with somewhat high graphics settings and HD video editing should also not be a problem with this laptop, although 4K editing might be problematic.

In terms of connectivity and additional features it has all the basics including WiFi, Bluetooth, a Gigabit ethernet port and 4 USB ports as well as a HDMI port for an external display. The battery is a 4-cell lithium ion battery.

One downside is that the battery doesn’t have that much juice, you might run out pretty quickly when gaming. But most of the time gaming laptops are connected to the power grid anyway, so it might not be such a big issue.

The cost of this rig on Amazon is $999, so just under $1000. As for the Amazon customer rating, it puts the laptop at 4.1 out of 5 stars and there were not too many complaints about this laptop, other than the default drivers might need to be updated, there is no LED indicators for the caps lock or num lock keys, and also there’s the issue that the keyboard backlighting only activates once you’ve logged into Windows.

HP Omen 15 UHD 4K

Screen: 15.6 inches, UHD 4K

Battery: 4-cell lithium ion, 3820mAh
Other: WiFi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth, HDMI, COMBO audio jack for headphone and mic, 4 x USB 3.0, Multi-format digital media card reader, mini Display port

# 2nd Place: Asus ROG STRIX GL502 VY DS74

Looking at some of the smaller 15 inch gaming laptops, I found that the HP Omen 15 UHD 4K is probably the best one available on Amazon at the moment.

It looks fairly nice, the case is matte black with a red symbol on the display lid and a backlit keyboard with red LEDs.

The Omen has the same Intel i7 processor as the previous Asus ROG, it has 32GB of DDR4 memory, a 4 gig NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M graphics card and is one of the few laptops with a ultra HD 4K display. It has a variety of harddrive options, one is a 2TB SATA harddrive with a 1TB SSD drive, on which Windows 10 is installed. The Omen should not have a problem running most games on high graphics settings and other performance intensive activities should also be fairly doable. It even exceeds the estimated system requirements for Battlefield 1.

Then of course it has all the basic additional components and features such as WiFi, Bluetooth, 4 USB ports and HDMI port. The only useful thing missing is a Gigabit ethernet port. It also has a 4-cell lithium ion battery.

The price for this gaming rig is $1889 on Amazon. This particular HP Omen model is fairly new, so it only had one 5 star review but other HP Omen variations have between 4 and 4.5 star ratings. Some previous complaints include the quality of the touchpad and occasional overheating issues.

Asus K501UX

Asus K501UX

Price: $790-800

Buy from Amazon

Screen: 15.6 inches, full HD
Platform: Windows 10
Processor: Intel i7 6500U 2.5GHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M 2GB
Harddrive: 258GB SSD + empty SATA slot
Battery: 3-cell lithium ion
Other: WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit Ethernet, COMBO audio jack for both headphones and mic, 2 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, HDMI, SD card reader, VGA web camera

# 2nd Place: Dell Inspiron i7559 12623RED

There are however much cheaper options for a decent 15 inch gaming laptop, such as the Asus K501UX which is just under $800.

In terms of looks, it’s nothing too impressive, it actually just looks like your average laptop with a black and silver colored case and no keyboard backlighting.

But the specs are pretty good considering the price. It has decent Intel i7 processor, 8GB of DDR3 memory, 2 gig NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M graphics card and a full HD display. For file storage it does not have much, it only comes with a 258GB SSD drive, but it does have a empty SATA harddrive slot in the chassis, where you can install an additional harddrive if you need to expand your onboard file storage capacity. The operating system for this rig is Windows 10.

Other components include WiFi, Bluetooth, a Gigabit Ethernet port, 4 USB ports and a HDMI port. The battery is a 3-cell lithium ion battery.

It is a bit lacking in DDR and graphics card memory as well as file storage capacity, but otherwise the specs are fairly decent considering the Asus K501UX only costs $799.99. This laptop has the recommended specifications for Battlefield 4, so you will be able to play a lot of other high definition games with it as well, although you might have to lower your graphics settings to make the games run smoothly.

It got a 3.8 out of 5 star rating on Amazon, and some common complaints from the reviews were regarding the poor quality of the touchpad and the speakers.
