Top 5 Best VPN Services (2018)

Today we’re going to be checking out the overall best VPN services currently available.

Why would you need a VPN service? Well if you live in the United States, your internet provider can now sell your web browsing history and other data to third party companies. If you live in the UK or Europe, thousands of people have been arrested and fined for being politically incorrect on social media. Russia blocked half the internet when they tried blocking one messaging app called Telegram. And of course China blocks most Western websites.

Basically we’re seeing a lot of internet restrictions pop up all over the world, not just in authoritarian countries, but also in Western nations. With a VPN you can protect your privacy and security online, as well as bypass firewalls, censorship and geo-restrictions such as on Netflix and do much more. VPNs are really becoming almost essential to enjoy the internet without restrictions.

#1 NordVPN

Best VPN Services NordVPN

First up we have NordVPN. In terms of privacy NordVPN is one of the better options. They are based in Panama, which has very good privacy laws and no data retention legislation. This means NordVPN can maintain a pretty solid privacy policy.

Their VPN service is available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, but they do not have an Amazon Fire TV app yet. So setting NordVPN up for Kodi on a Fire TV device is a bit more challenging, and there are some better VPN options for that.

The NordVPN clients have some interesting features, in addition to the usual military grade encryption, kill switch and so on. For example, you can connect either to a random NordVPN server in a certain country, or to any individual server. Most VPN clients can’t do this. Also there are some speciality servers such as Anti-DDoS servers, which can protect live streamers and gamers from DDoS attacks.

NordVPN connection speeds were excellent when testing in Europe and the US. I was able to download through bittorrent and access US Netflix without any issues.

Their prices are very affordable, costing only $3.29 per month for a 2 year contract. NordVPN also supports many cryptocurrencies through the CoinPayments service. There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee.

NordVPN is recommended for …
✔️ Privacy protection
✔️ General use
✔️ Downloading, torrenting, P2P
✔️ Netflix and other streaming services
✔️ Gaming and live streaming
✔️ DDoS attack protection

Summary of NordVPN

Platforms Privacy Security Bandwidth Speed P2P Netflix Cryptocurrency
Windows, Mac, Android, iOS Excellent Military Grade Unlimited Excellent Yes Accessible Yes

Prices starting at $3.29/month. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee!

#2 ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is another really good VPN service that I can highly recommend. They are based in the British Virgin Islands. BVI is a British Overseas Territory, but it is not part of the UK or the EU. This means they can make a lot of their own laws and offer the similar advantages as Panama does for NordVPN.

The advantage that ExpressVPN has over NordVPN is that in addition to the usual platforms they have an Amazon Fire TV app, making it much easier to setup a VPN on Kodi and Fire TV devices. However with ExpressVPN you can only connect 3 devices, compared to 6 devices with NordVPN.

ExpressVPN also has servers in 94 different countries, compared to 60 countries for NordVPN. So if you’re looking for a VPN server in a very specific country, then ExpressVPN is the way to go.

According to my testing ExpressVPN servers in both Europe and the US were very fast. I was able to download torrents at high speeds and access US Netflix on some servers, but others were blocked.

ExpressVPN is a bit more expensive at $8.32 per month for a 1 year plan. They support bitcoin payments and have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN is recommended for …
✔️ General use
✔️ Downloading, torrenting, P2P
✔️ Kodi and Fire TV devices
✔️ Gaming
✔️ Streaming services, but not the best for Netflix

Summary of ExpressVPN

Platforms Privacy Security Bandwidth Speed P2P Netflix Cryptocurrency
Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Fire TV Excellent Military Grade Unlimited Great Yes Mixed Yes

Prices starting at $8.32/month. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee!

#3 Windscribe

Windscribe VPN

Next up we have Windscribe VPN. Windscribe is based in Canada which is part of the five eyes intelligence alliance and it does have some data retention laws. But these laws are generally believed to not apply to VPN services. Especially considering Windscribe has a fairly solid privacy policy and you can even sign up for an account without an email address.

The Windscribe VPN service is in my opinion of similar quality as NordVPN and ExpressVPN, although they have less servers and in the future their privacy protection may suffer due to being based in Canada.

You can use Windscribe on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. They also have Fire TV app and web browser proxy extensions for Chrome and Firefox. The others have extensions too, but Windscribe was one of the first to offer it.

Connection speeds for their European and US servers were quite good. Bittorrent downloading worked with excellent speeds and I was able to access US Netflix with their Windflix US server option.

Windscribe is also the only VPN service in this list with a free account option, with up to 15GB of free monthly bandwidth. Their paid service costs only $3.70 per month for a 2 year subscription. Bitcoin payments are accepted as well.

Windscribe is recommended for …
✔️ General use
✔️ Downloading, torrenting, P2P
✔️ Gaming
✔️ Netflix and other streaming services
✔️ Kodi and Fire TV devices

Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Fire TV Great Military Grade Unlimited Great Yes Accessible Yes

#4 VyprVPN

VyprVPN

Then we have VyprVPN by Golden Frog. The service is based Switzerland, which is not the best or the worst location for a VPN service because they have data retention laws. VyprVPN also does log your IP address and quite a bit of meta data, which means it is not the best VPN for serious privacy protection.

The main advantage VyprVPN has over the other VPN services in this list is that they operate their own custom VPN protocol called Chameleon. This might give VyprVPN an edge in terms of bypassing firewalls that are built to detect more common VPN protocols such as OpenVPN or L2TP. Chameleon is however only available for premium subscribers.

VyprVPN also supports all of the standard platforms in addition to Fire TV, Apple TV and Android TV.

When I tested VyprVPN their connection speeds were good on servers in Europe and the US. Bittorrent worked fine and it was also possible for me to access US Netflix with no problems.

A 1 year subscription for VyprVPN is reasonably priced at $5 per month for a standard account, and $6.67 for a premium account. They don’t accept cryptocurrencies however and only offer a 3-day free trial. But no money-back guarantee after ordering.

VyprVPN is recommended for …
✔️ General use
✔️ Kodi and Fire TV devices
✔️ Gaming
✔️ Netflix and other streaming services
✔️ Possibly better in countries like China and UAE which block common VPN protocols

Summary of VyprVPN

Platforms Privacy Security Bandwidth Speed P2P Netflix Cryptocurrency
Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Fire TV Average Military Grade Unlimited Good Yes Accessible No

Prices starting at $5.00/month. 3-Day Free Trial!

#5 TorGuard

TorGuard VPN

Another somewhat decent VPN service is TorGuard. They are however based in the United States, so I do not recommend TorGuard for Americans due to the CLOUD Act which became law in February 2018. Basically it forces companies based in the United States to hand over data even from servers that they operate in foreign countries if a court rules that they should do so. All your data are belong to Uncle Sam.

Additionally the TorGuard privacy policy is somewhat vague. They don’t mention exactly what data they log and how they use it. Their privacy policy is not compliant with the new EU GDPR legislation.

TorGuard does however sell pre-configured internet routers with custom firmware that have TorGuard VPN installed. So if you want to connect all your devices at home to a VPN, and you’re not technologically literate enough to do it yourself or just lazy, then this might be a good option for you. They also have custom clients for all the usual platforms, but no Fire TV app.

Their connection speeds were good on all of the servers I tested. I was also able to download torrents and access US Netflix. As with every other VPN in this list, they have no DNS leaks and a strong encryption.

The cheapest TorGuard subscription is $4.16 per month for a 2 year contract. Bitcoin and Litecoin are accepted as payment, in addition to the usual options like Paypal and credit card. TorGuard has a 7-day money-back guarantee.

TorGuard is recommended for …
✔️ General use
✔️ Downloading, torrenting, P2P
✔️ Gaming
✔️ Netflix and other streaming services
✔️ Custom internet routers
✖️ Not recommended for Americans
