ExpressVPN is one of the biggest VPN services at the moment, it was founded in 2009 and is based in the British Virgin Islands, or BVI for short. BVI is an internally self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Basically they are technically part of the UK but make their own internal laws which has enabled them to offer companies less legal liability and additional layers of privacy. This is good for security and privacy purposes but not necessarily very relevant if you’re looking for a VPN to watch Netflix with. However, it is still a bonus in my opinion.
ExpressVPN has over 1000 servers in 87 countries and over 15000 IP-addresses to pick from using their own VPN client which supports most common VPN protocols. This makes ExpressVPN very good for gaming no matter where you are. They also have numerous US and UK based servers, most of which enable access to Netflix US and BBC iPlayer. I was indeed able to login and watch videos from the Netflix American library by using the US-based VPN servers.
Unfortunately there are no free accounts or free trial option for ExpressVPN, but they do have a 30-day moneyback guarantee. ExpressVPN’s customer service is also fairly quick to respond, with a live chat option included.
There are no data transfer limits and I tried out connection speeds on UK and US servers, both reached the maximum speed for my internet connection, which is not the fastest, and latency was about what I expected. I am located in Europe and on the UK servers my ping was 45ms and the best ping I got on US servers was 120ms using L2TP over IPSec and a bit over 140ms with OpenVPN, which is not bad considering the distance.
Security & Privacy
They do collect some data such as dates when users connect, what server they choose and the amount of data transfered. This data is allegedly used to improve the service. However they do not collect or log traffic data or browsing activity from individual connected users to their VPN service.
ExpressVPN also has a number of VPN protocols available in their VPN client. Most widely used is PPTP and OpenVPN, but L2TP over IPSec and SSTP are also available on a limited amount of servers.
Their VPN client also does not leak DNS information.
Cost & Payment
ExpressVPN only really has one account option which can be paid in different intervals and periods, but the cheapest option is a annual payment of $99.95 or about $8.32 per month.
Payment options include credit cards, Paypal, Paymentwall and Bitcoin.
