Panda Free Antivirus is a antivirus application created by Spanish IT security company Panda Security SL. The program is available for Windows computers and Android mobile devices.
The free version of Panda does have these annoying pop-up reminders to upgrade it to the paid version, but you can actually disable them quite easily in 3 steps.
1. Just click the icon with three lines on the top right of the antivirus program
2. Go to Settings, then to General and scroll down to the bottom untill you see a ”Panda news”
3. Then simply turn it off. That’s basically it.
Panda is quite lightweight, especially when idle, it only consumes around 30 megabytes of memory and pretty much no processing power. The virus scanner also operates in the cloud while connected to the internet, which takes a load off from your computer and frees up resources.
The antivirus scanner has real-time protection against various viruses, worms and trojans, as well as spyware, adware and other types of malware and potentially unwanted programs which may be hidden or bundled in legitimate software products.
With the On-Demand scanner you can perform full system scans, or only scan critical areas, or define your own custom scan by selecting various folders and locations to analyze.
Panda also has USB protection, so when you connect a USB drive it can automatically scan it for viruses or other kinds of malware.
Then it also has a process monitor, where you can see and manage the software currently running on your computer, including specifically the ones accessing the internet. The process monitor can also monitor URLs that internet connected processes are trying to access and block potentially harmful sites such as phising websites or other known attack sites.
AV-Test actually tried out the free version of Panda Antivirus in their latest test, and scored it as 5.5 out of 6 for Protection, 4.5 out of 6 for Performance and 6 out of 6 for Usability.
In other words it’s a good antivirus program and I give them props for allowing to disable the pop-up reminders without having to resort to complex methods or third party programs.
I’ll score Panda with 8.3 out of 10 points.
Good antivirus protection
Pop-ups easily disabled
Low consumption of computer resources
Limited scheduling functionality
Slightly worse protection against phising and harmful websites than last year
